1. Academic

For all our MA courses, applicants are normally expected to have a good (e.g. upper second class) degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent. Non-graduate applicants (for MA ELT taught and dissertation tracks only) must have a relevant teaching qualification and several years' Englsih language teaching experience. The MA Linguistic Research does not presuppose strong subject-specific knowledge, but aims to help students achieve this by the end of the course.

2. English

Non-native speakers are required to show evidence of English language proficiency.

2.1 For MA Applied Linguistics and MA English Language Teaching campus-based courses, this must least IELTS 6.5 overall, with no sub-test below 6; TOEFL paper-based test 580; computer-based test 240; TWE 4.5. For students with less than IELTS 7 (or equivalent), free additional language support is available through a specially-designed in-sessional English course during the first term of the MA course.

2.2 For the MA English Language Teaching by Distance Study, the language requirement is IELTS 7 overall, with no sub-test below 6.5; TOEFL paper-based test 600; computer-based test 250; TWE 5.0.

3. Work experience

MA Applied Linguistics Applicants are required to have at least two years' formal language teaching experience or in an equivalent language-related profession such as translation or publishing.

MA English Language Teaching Dissertation and Taught Tracks are designed for experienced language teachers with at least two years' formal language teaching experience; the Portfolio Track is open to applicants who have less than two years' language teaching experience, including those without formal classroom experience. No work experience is required for MA Linguistics Research applicants.

4. Prior learning

Graduate applicants for the MA Applied Linguistics and MA English Language Teaching with a recent Cambridge DELTA or Trinity College Diploma TESOL qualification can request Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL).
