Justine Holmes: gained confidence and even a promotion

Justine Holmes came to the Institute of Education as a passionate mature student. The high quality teaching and individual student support available helped Justine successfully complete her master's course which led to her receiving a promotion.

Many are drawn to education as a calling. Curiously though, teaching was not the original plan for Justine Holmes. However, once she thought of the idea, something clicked. "It felt so right; it was an; Of course! moment."

Justine went into her MA Education with the same approach that led her into teaching: "I just wanted to make a difference". She found that returning to learning after 25 years as a teacher meant that she understood the educational process a lot better and felt more attuned to it. However, there were challenges; she found essay writing very difficult, particularly as she has always been a maths-based person.

“My writing confidence has increased so much through essay writing, sharing the experience and talking to the academics at the Institute of Education.”

Individual support and care

The Institute of Education helped support Justine in a number of different ways. During her course Justine suffered a major personal crisis and then, just after completing her dissertation, Justine underwent a back operation followed by a long period of recovery. With the support and understanding of the Institute of Education Justine was able to successfully complete her master's. She subsequently received a promotion.

Showing resilience in such challenging times and successfully completing her dissertation, gave Justine a huge confidence boost. She credits the Institute of Education and the support she received from colleagues and staff as being the factor that helped her succeed.

“Writing my dissertation under the circumstances was hard, but I received enormous support from staff at the Institute of Education, particularly Richard Harris. He constantly has ideas outside the box which makes learning fun! Looking back now, I'm not sure how I made it through but I did! And coincidence or not, our new head teacher promoted me soon after I completed my MA.”
