Windows 10 start guide: detailed

Getting started with Windows 10

Classroom and Staff PCs are being upgraded from Windows 7 operating system to Windows 10, as part of IT's project to upgrade all University PCs.

In many ways, you will find that Windows 10 is very similar to the Windows 7 that you know, but there are some differences to familiarise yourself with.

The guide below helps you know what to expect, and you will be up and running in no time.

Search

If there isn't a tile for what you're looking for, you can search for it directly instead.

From the Start menu screen above, just start typing the first few letters of the name of the application, and it will appear in a list of suggested results if it is installed:

Custom tiles

You can create a tile for the Start menu for applications that you need to launch often.

When you have located the application (e.g. using the Search method above), right-click on it and choose 'Pin to Start'. The new tile will appear in the Start menu next time you open it.

Software

The standard and core ISLI software are installed on the PC already, including:

  • Microsoft Office 2016
  • Smart Notebook
  • Longman Dictionary
  • Garnet eBooks
  • Google Chrome
  • Windows Media Player

To check for further options please consult the Software Center in Windows 10 to see available software. If you can't find the required software there then please check Apps Anywhere (see below).

Other optional software is available through Apps Anywhere, including:

  • Audacity
  • Endnote
  • Jing
  • Read & Write Gold
  • VLC Media Player

Apps Anywhere can be launched via the Desktop icon.

Task view and multiple desktops

Task View provides an overview of all your open windows and offers virtual desktop features. You can launch Task View by clicking on the overlapping rectangles next to the Search taskbar.

If you open lots of programs at once the new multiple desktop feature helps you to keep them organised. To create another desktop launch Task View and click on New Desktop in the bottom right of the screen. At the bottom of Task View you will see a thumbnail of each desktop to switch between.

Logging off

Simply click the Logoff tile in the Start menu to sign out of the computer:
