Understanding the University

It is important to have an understanding of how the University works and how incidents may affect both specific departments and the University as a whole. Consideration also needs to be given to timing as an incident may cause more disruption if it were to occur around key dates, such as the start of the academic year, the examination period or clearing, than during the summer vacation.

In order to build up a clear picture of the University, each department has undergone a Business Impact Analysis (BIA). Conducting BIAs identifies what Schools and Departments require to perform their essential functions. This enables a planned and consistent approach to recovering teaching, learning, research and other core UoR functions following an emergency.

BIAs should be reviewed by the department annually to ensure that all information is up to date and any changes to the department or its function are included. After a BIA has been carried out the next step is to determine strategies to minimise the time taken to return to business as usual.
