Under the skin of life
Our biology degree programmes span seven different subjects, offering you a wealth of different options for learning about the living world. Whether you're keen to explore biology in all its breadth, or focus on a specialist discipline that fascinates you, you will find a course to suit you at Reading.
92% of leavers were in work and/or study 15 months after the end of their course (Graduate Outcomes Survey 2017/18; First Degree responders from Biological Sciences).*
Tailor your degree to your own interests.
Biology is a multifaceted discipline that stretches from the study of basic molecules through to unravelling the complexity of multicellular organisms and how they interact with an ever-changing environment. This flexible degree will allow you to explore the full spectrum of biological sciences, drawing ideas and concepts across different disciplinary boundaries and taking an integrated approach to evolution, drug discovery, animal behaviour and our climate.
Learn about the molecular foundations of life itself.
Biochemists seek to understand the fundamentals of how chemicals allow life to function from the smallest bacteria to mammals. Biochemistry is therefore the foundation upon which biological processes are built. This biochemistry degree will allow you to discover not only how life functions and the human body works but also how we treat disease.
Bringing the power of engineering to the field of healthcare.
Biomedical Engineering is the application of engineering to healthcare problems. In Biomedical Engineering we invent technologies to diagnose disease at early stages, restore lost body functions and improve quality of life for patients and the elderly. You will study subjects such as neuroscience, medical imaging and wearable electronics.
Are you interested in what causes disease and what we can do about it?
If you would like to understand and research disease, biomedical sciences is the discipline for you. Bridging the gap between medicine and pure science, this degree will launch you into a career where you can help to advance front line medicine. Our expert biomedical scientists research diseases including heart failure, cancer and muscle disorders, and you can join the fight for cures.
Ecology and Wildlife Conservation
You care about the environment and the wildlife within it.
The Earth is in the midst of the sixth mass extinction, an extinction process driven by global climate change, over-exploitation, agricultural intensification, pollution, urbanisation and many more factors. Learning through lectures but with an extraordinarily large emphasis on practical, hands-on work you will learn how these factors interact and operate to influence the environment. You will graduate as a rounded ecologist with the skills and knowledge to embark on a career in an aspect of ecology and wildlife conservation.
Gain an advanced understanding of the biology of disease, with a focus on diagnosis and treatment.
Our new BSc Medical Science degree course provides a solid grounding in the cellular and molecular biology underpinning disease whilst also exploring how such diseases are diagnosed, prevented and treated. The programme has been designed in partnership with our local NHS partners to respond to career needs within the NHS, with tailored pathways in Diseases, Medical Devices and Clinical and Medical Sciences. You will get hands-on experience at the forefront of modern medicine, through multiple short clinical placements with our local NHS partners.
Study the hidden world and learn how microbes impact our lives.
Microbiology focuses on organisms that are too small to be seen by the naked eye and yet dominate our world. You will learn how microbes function, by exploring microbial biochemistry, cell biology, ecology and evolution. Some microbes cause devastating diseases such as Ebola, AIDS and Malaria, which require the development of effective vaccines and antimicrobials. Other microbes play important roles in food production, global nutrient cycling and in biotechnology. You will consider the broad-ranging impact microbes have on our lives and our planet.
Learn about the awe-inspiring variety and complexity of animal life.
Zoology is the science of animal life. In this degree you will gain expertise in the behaviour, anatomy, physiology, ecology and evolution of animals of all kinds, from trilobites to tigers. Our own Museum of Zoology, a campus teeming with life, excellent laboratory facilities, and expert zoology staff together ensure that Reading can deliver a distinctively focused and fascinating degree. On this course, you will study zoology from day one, and will study animals in their natural environment through extensive field work.
