How you'll learn on the MSc by Research Biomedicine course

Combining taught modules, an industrial challenge and a seven-month research project, this course provides you with a broad research training to prepare you for a career in biomedical research or for PhD study.

Biomedical taught modules

In the first term, you will take three taught modules that will give you the knowledge and theoretical skills to act as a biomedical researcher:

  • Research Techniques and Experimental Design
  • Research Planning and Project Management
  • Advanced Topics in Biomedicine.

Learn research techniques such as confocal microscopy, flow cytometry and cloning, and discuss the latest scientific papers with leading scientists from around the country..

Discussions with leading scientists

As part of the Advanced Topics in Biomedicine module, you’ll be exposed to a range of topics at the cutting edge of modern biomedical research.

You will discuss the latest scientific papers with peers and academics. The School of Biological Sciences hosts leading scientists from around the country, and you'll have the opportunity to meet them to discuss their research.

Industrial challenge

The skills developed in your first term will be applied in a unique industrial challenge set by our partner RSSL.

They are a leading provider of world-leading scientific and technical solutions to the global food, drink, pharmaceutical, healthcare, biopharmaceutical and consumer goods sectors.

30-week research project

For your 30-week research project, you'll choose from a broad range of areas based on research being conducted in our School. Specialist areas include:

  • cancer
  • cardiovascular disease
  • genetics
  • microbiology
  • stem cells and regenerative medicine.
