New buildings and laboratories
The School of Biological Sciences has recently carried out an extensive refurbishment and redesign. We now have a purpose-built suite of laboratories designed for teaching and research.
These suites of microscopic equipment are perfect for students and academics alike. Versatile and powerful microscopes with functions as various as live cell imaging, dissection recording, time-lapse recording and analysis can be found here. All microscopes are fitted with professional digital cameras to allow accurate records. We operate a booking system so that you can be sure that equipment will be available.
The new laboratories have been designed to accommodate every discipline of the biological sciences. You will find facilities including tissue culture suites, multi-mode microplate readers (absorbance, fluorescence, luminescence), multicolour flow cytometry, real-time PCR, digital gel scanning and documentation, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, ultra-centrifuges, chromatography including FPLC and HPLC and equipment for the large-scale growth and harvesting of microbial and animal cells. The Cole Museum of Zoology also has laboratory facilities for examining specimens.
