Joint courses

At Reading School of Art we offer a broad range of joint courses. Maximise your time with us and your career opportunities by combining your study of art with another subject you are passionate about.

Our joint courses allow you to study two separate subjects in detail and gain a full qualification in each.  Studying two subjects adds breadth to your knowledge base but also equips you with skills from two different disciplines, as well as valuable time management skills in balancing your studies.

We offer a range of flexible and diverse joint courses, where you can complement your art practice with either English Literature,  Film, Film and Theatre, History of Art, Philosophy or Psychology. You will explore both subjects in full and the over lap between them.

"Most people think that studying a joint degree at university is double the work, but it is definitely not! I love being part of two very different departments, and studying two subjects means there is a lot of variety in my degree which keeps me engaged and interested."

Ellie de Wild, BA Art and English Literature

course structure

Joint courses are carefully designed so that you  spend around 50% of your time on each subject. You will study the core modules from both degree programmes allowing you to examine the two subjects in depth. On a single degree programmes students select a range of optional modules to study in addition their core modules.

We regularly review our range of modules to ensure what you are learning is applicable, relevant and up to date with latest developments in both disciplines.

You will be equally at home in both departments, but you will have one academic tutor who will support you throughout your degree.

"Studying History of Art alongside Art has been extremely beneficial to my own art practice. I have learnt so much about the origins of different art methods and styles and can then confidently apply these ideas to my own work"

Becca Lynn, BA Art and History of Art

Joint courses enable you to develop a broader range of transferrable skills. Students who take joint courses degrees can demonstrate a range of competencies and abilities in a number of areas.

"Without a doubt, the benefit of studying of a joint degree beyond university is that it is very attractive to employers; not only in the fact that you can apply yourself to two different disciplines, but also that you can adapt easily and be flexible."

Ellie de Wild, BA Art and English Literature
