I am motivated by social and environmental issues, and public participation in planning and design.

I am interested in how architectural education prepares students for practice, and what additional skills are needed to cope with the challenges of the current political, social, economic and environmental climate.

Career Path

I joined Architype in 2007 and have worked on a series of education projects including school expansion schemes and a new Junior School for Highgate School.

I am currently working with the Rural Urban Synthesis Society (RUSS); a forward-thinking Community Land Trust to deliver 33 self-build homes in Ladywell, Lewisham, working with Lewisham Homes (an ALMO) on a pilot project to refurbish seven sheltered housing schemes, and with The Royal Parks to develop a new learning centre in Greenwich Park.

Teaching experience:

I have taught at degree and postgraduate level at the University of Sheffield, and co-facilitated a MArch/Masters Design Studio in 2013 questioning the process of market-led urbanisation by getting to grips with the global urban housing crisis, and exploring some of the responses by citizens through different forms of collaboration and exchange. Using sites in Lewisham, the students explored self-build/community-led projects that involved training and capacity development.

I volunteered with Architecture Sans Frontières - UK (ASF-UK) for over seven years developing and teaching inclusive, participatory and empowering methods of working effectively within communities, to alleviate poverty and increase community capacity. I co-facilitated workshops in the UK, India and Colombia and contributed to the development of a reflective learning programme called Challenging Practice: Essentials for the Social Production of Habitat. Challenging Practice is targeted at built environment professionals with an interest (but no prior knowledge) in the challenges that are impacting on the human development of billions of people across the world, and was developed through a partnership of International ASF organisations funded by the European Commission under the Leonardo Da Vinci programme.
