The 11th Roman Archaeology Conference

The 24th Theoretical Roman Archaeology Conference

Thursday 27 to Sunday 30 March 2014

Roman Society logoThe University of Reading is proud to host the Biennial International Roman Archaeology Conference in collaboration with the Roman Society, bringing the conference back to where it began in 1995.

We have 163 presentations with five or six parallel sessions, with speakers from 16 countries, over half from outside the UK.

The conference starts on Thursday 27 March in the evening, with registration, a welcome and the plenary lecture. Full sessions run throughout Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning, with an optional excursion to Silchester Roman Town on the Sunday afternoon. It will bring together sessions from the Roman Society, from the Study Group for Roman Pottery, from the Roman Finds Group and from the Theoretical Roman Archaeology Conference. Alongside the material and theoretical sessions there will be particular emphases on: Pompeii and Italy; the value of developer-funded archaeology in understanding the Romano-British countryside in Britain and Northern France; and on Zooarchaeology.

The Roman Archaeology Conference is the premier Roman archaeological conference, originally based in the UK, but now alternately held in the UK and abroad. In 2012 it was hosted by the Römisch-Germanische Kommission des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Our aim is to bring together interested parties from all sectors to present and discuss the latest archaeological discoveries from the Roman world and beyond.
