Staff Profile:Dr Rebecca Meagher

Name:
Dr Rebecca Meagher
Job Title:
Lecturer in Dairy Animal Science
Responsibilities:
Areas of Interest:

I am broadly interested in the effects of housing and management on the welfare and behavioural development of captive animals. My current research is aimed at improving dairy cattle welfare and understanding the short and long-term effects of early experience on behaviour, emotional states, and productivity. Planned research will include work on both social and physical environmental enrichment, and the development or refinement of new methods of assessing states such as fear or anxiety and boredom.

Recent projects have included investigating the effects of social vs. individual housing of calves on their cognition, heifers' preferences for different types of stimulation, and the reliability of methods of assessing fear. In the past, I have also studied the behaviour and welfare of farmed mink, and the benefits of environmental enrichment for their reproduction.

General bio:

Rebecca has a BSc in Zoology from the University of Toronto and a PhD in Animal Science from the University of Guelph, both in Canada. She has worked in the Animal Welfare Program at the University of British Columbia, and is a member of the International Society for Applied Ethology. She can be found on twitter at @rkmeagher.
