Research interests:

I have three interconnected research interests. The first is on livelihood processes and the dynamics of change for marginalised groups of people, including how these dynamics interface with issues of knowledge, power, equity, gender and agency. Over the years, and with strong emphasis on field-based participatory research, I have examined the livelihood dynamics of small-holder farmers, beekeepers, miners and fishers, amongst others, exploring how people negotiate development or conservation interventions to mediate change within their lives and livelihoods. My second, related, interest is on climate risk management and social protection, with a focus on poverty and vulnerability reduction for groups of people living in fragile environments. My third interest, again connected, is within the arena of artisanal gold mining, incorporating issues of innovation, mobility, markets and fair trade. I am currently Project Leader for the EU Horizon 2020 funded NORFACE/Belmont Forum "Sustainability Transformations in Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining: Trans-Regional and Multi-Actor Perspectives" project Also the GCRF "Network for Interdisciplinary Partnership on Mineral Sector Development, Social Equity and Inclusion in Africa".

I have been a grant-holder for projects funded by the Leverhulme Trust, ESRC, DFID, GCRF, Newton Fund, USAID, and the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association, amongst others. I have also led or participated in consultancy work for DFID, EU, FAO, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland, Bees for Development, the Fairtrade Foundation, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research, ActionAid International, Welsh Government, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the World Food Programme.
