International Development

We offer seven International Development programmes, covering a diverse range of topics that include applied development, agriculture, climate change, communication, environmental change and food security.

MSc Applied International Development

This programme links theory, policy and practice for effective international and community development.

You will develop an interdisciplinary understanding of the complex factors that influence the effectiveness of planned interventions, and an understanding of the conceptual and theoretical frameworks for the analysis of social change brought about by planned development interventions.

You are encouraged to follow one of four pathways.

MSc Agriculture and Development

Examine how agriculture (including horticulture) may address the global challenges and opportunities of agricultural intensification and environmental sustainability, particularly in the tropics and subtropics. This flexible programme offers a horticulture pathway.

MSc Climate Change and Development

Climate change has far-reaching economic and social implications. This programme examines the social scientific drivers, and consequences, of climate change and associated policy debates.

You will focus on the interface between climate change and development, with particular attention paid to the perspective of ecological economics.

MSc Communication for Development

Rapid changes in the communication landscape – technologies, communication processes and communication opportunities – offer new ways to understand and improve livelihoods, poverty reduction, and governance.

Understand how communication can support individual and social change, leading to more effective and dynamic development practice.

MSc Environment and Development

Globally, we face serious and rapidly evolving environmental challenges on a number of fronts and at many levels. Simultaneously, it is important that we continue to make real progress towards an economically fairer and socio-politically more just world.

This programme provides analytically rigorous, stimulating and balanced perspectives on the inter-relations between environment and development at the global, regional, national and local levels.

MSc Food Security and Development

This programme will prepare you for a career in the international food security and development sectors.

Gain a multi-disciplinary understanding of the structure and operation of food systems in developing countries and how these systems interact with human development policies and interventions at international, national and local levels.
