This is the back band and trace chains from the harness of a cart horse. The back band takes the weight of the shafts or poles of the cart, and the traces take the pull from the horse's collar to the load it is pulling. The harness was used on the Godman Estate in Horsham, West Sussex, and at Pepper Gate Farm in Lower Beeding, West Sussex.
