    This is a wire strainer, a tool used for tightening wires on wire fences. It was used on early wire fences in the Weardale area of County Durham, where wire fences were particularly in use in the late-nineteenth century. The wire was gripped between the jaws, held against the straining post, and the wire tightened by turning the hand screw.
