    This is a spud or grubber used to bruise thistles before the seed is formed. Used in the Weardale area of County Durham.
    This is a thistle spud. Thistles can either be cut down with a scythe, or bruised with a spud or ‘grubber’ before the seed is formed. Spuds have a flat iron head, with a cutting edge. This spud was used in the Weardale area of County Durham. Its handle is missing.
