    MERL miscellaneous note - This artefact was stored at one time in two parts and had two separate entries on the database. The other entry read as follows: 'This is the handle for a side axe. A side axe has a cutting edge which is bevelled (sharpened) on one side only. This handle is separated from the axe head, but when attached, the head is slightly out of line. The museum holds on information about the origins or use of this side axe.'
