    This is the flywheel from a bottle jack. A bottle jack is a device for turning a spit in front of a fire, wouund by a key. This bottle jack was originally used at Hartley Court Farm, Three Mile Cross, near Reading. It is not known precisely when it was last used, but it was found wrapped up in old newspapers dating from 1904-10. It was found with a dutch oven, which it may have been used in conjunction with. The front of the jack is marked 'John Linwood Warranted.'. The name plate also has a tree design.
