Archival history
Palmer was the First President of the Council of the University of Reading. Alfred was the son of George Palmer, George Palmer (1818-1897) went in to partnership with Thomas Huntley (his cousin) to establish Huntley & Palmers in Reading. For a large part of the 19th, and then well into the 20th century, Huntley & Palmers was the largest biscuit manufacturer in the world. The Palmer family was, and remain, benefactors of the University of Reading.
