  • Description
47 bobbins with spangles, glass beads or ornaments. They belonged to the donor’s grandmother, who made lace until her death in 1890.
These 47 wooden bobbins have spangles, glass beads or ornaments attached to the bottom of the bobbin to provide additional weight. They belonged to the donor’s grandmother, who made lace until her death in 1890. The donor remembers jangling them when she was a child and her grandmother pretending to stab her with a pin from the pattern. It used to be customary for women and girls to give each other bobbins as keepsakes.
