    This steelyard weight, or 'bob', was used with the main steelyard implement for weighing trusses of hay for market. It was used by a family of Thatchers and hay and straw traders who worked in the central Essex area, and was is use in the late nineteenth century. The weights they used were as follows: Truss of straw: 36lbs; Truss of dry hay: 56lbs; Truss of new hay: 60lbs.
