  • Archival history
Citation in publication [H. J. Massingham, 'Country Relics' (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1939)] – 'The largest blade was for the horse, middle for a cow and the smallest for a calf, though I could never make out the object of these nice discriminations. A cord was placed around the animal's neck and pulled tight to swell the vein. The knife with its conical little blade protruding from the larger one was placed against the vein and struck with a mallet.' (pp.125-126) [see also 35/56], MERL list / description [Massingham Collection, October 1989] – 'ACC. NO.: 51/95 // NAME: FLEAM // NEG NO.: 5/49 // STORAGE: '
