Description
Smock kept in the attic of Stonelands Farm, Withyham, East Sussex. Possibly belonged to the donor's great grandmother, Combe Farm, Wadhurst.
This smock was kept in the attic of Stonelands Farm, Withyham, East Sussex, for many years. The coat-like smock is cream coloured, with decorative stitching and smocking panels. There is smocking under the collar at front and back, smocking at top of each arm and by each wrist. There is decorative stitching on the edge of the collar - two lines of interlocking stitches, with two rows of dashes inside them. Each sleeve has one button at the wrist (buttons do not match). The coat is fastened by nine buttonholes but only six buttons are left - five of copper-alloy and one in mother of pearl style. The smock has been patched on the right hand side. The smock was donated along with an apron [2003/1] and it is thought possible that both originally belonged to the donor's great grandmother, Louisa nee Tompsett, of Combe Farm, Wadhurst.
