A servant's trunk used Ada Holyroyd of Stoke Row, Oxfordshire, to carry her clothes and belongings when she went into domestic service c. 1910.
This servant's box or trunk was used by the donor's mother, Ada Holyroyd [nee Carter] of Stoke Row, Oxfordshire, to carry her clothes and belongings when she went into domestic service c. 1910. The trunk is much older, however, having been used by Ada's mother Emily Carter [nee Lester] before her, and Emily's mother before her. The trunk is lined with pages from The Pall Mall Gazette from 1889, so probably dates from the late-nineteenth century. It is made of wood, strengthened with metal straps, and has metal hinges, a lock, and a handle at each end for carrying.

It has two metal hinges and a lock although the hasp and key are missing. It is stained a dark colour and has a handle on each end. It is lined with pages from The Pall Mall Gazette dated 27 November 1889. // Dimensions // Length: 60.0cm // Width: 38.5cm // Height: 36.5cm // Associated information // This box was used by Ada Carter of Stoke Row to carry her clothes and other belongings when she went into domestic service in about 1910. She told her son [Mr. Holyroyd] that the box was also used for the same purpose by her mother, Emily Lester before her marriage to Albert Carter a chair bodger, and by her mother before her. This is borne out to some extent by the fact that the box is lined with pages from The Pall Mall Gazette of 27 Nov. 1889.'
