  • Physical description
Knee-length jacket-style overall: soft brown leather; good condition
  • Label Text
Dairy farmer’s jacket, 1920s-1950s. This is one of two soft leather jackets both acquired from one donor. They were used by a dairy farmer, initially at Marsh Farm, near Wrafton, North Devon between 1920 and 1935. He went on to use them at Pottington Farm, near Barnstable, Devon between 1935 and 1955. Although utilitarian, the hardwearing nature of leather and the high quality workmanship meant the items were considered worth keeping even though they were no longer in active use. Mass-produced working clothes became more popular during the post-war period. Their cheap cost led to increased disposability, meaning example were less likely to be retained. MERL 96/24/1.
