Archival history
MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This tool was used by carpenters for planning the beading on furniture and other surfaces. The blade was tooth edged, and cut a groove in the surface as the plane was drawn firmly along. // The stock measures 10.75 inches in length and would be grasped at both ends. The blade is missing but there is a cavity for it and the wedge, which would secure it at the correct cutting depth. There is an additional cavity through which the shavings would escape. The carpenter would probably have a set of blades of different sizes for this tool. The sharpening and fitting of these blades was a skilled task as there had to be a delicate adjustment between the cutting edge and the curve of the plane.', Lavinia Smith Catalogue (D60/28) - 'A list of the contents of the East Hendred museum. July 5 1940 // 506. Moulding plane.'
