This small polished pole plane has a concave sole and was used for smoothing edges of round surfaces such as poles. It was made by Aaron Hildick of Sheffield, and was used by R. Dooley of Berkshire. It was given to the Museum by the Woodworking Department at the University of Reading.

Archival history
MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This small plane was used for smoothing the edges of round surfaces, such as those of a pole, or a rounded ridge of wood. It is made of white beech and is 7 inches long, 2 inches wide at the front bottom, 2.5 inches high and 1.4 inches wide at the top of the front. The sole is concave as is the blade, which is 2 inches wide. The front of the stock is stamped ‘R. Dooley’ and the top of the blade plate ‘Aaron Hildick Warranted Cast Steel’.'
