    MERL miscellaneous note - Georgia Charitou - 27 October 2014- The artist and writer Thomas Hennell (1903-1945) recorded English rural life during the 1930's and early 1940's. In 1943 he was appointed a war artist and lost his life, aged 42, in Java under unclear circumstances. Throughout his life, from his earliest days in Ridley Rectory, Hennell had an intense interest in the the countryside. He travelled throughout Britain on his bicycle, seeking out and recording the individual features of each region.
