  • Description
    A 'Homcam' canning machine for domestic use. It made of metal, painted blue, and has a handle with a wooden grip. It would be fastened to the table top by means of screws (stored in an attached envelope.) It is stored in a green metal box with a clasp fastening and two handles. The machine was made by Home Canning Equipment Ltd. The box is dated 1943 and also bears the number 'B167'. It is not known how the machine arrived at the Museum, but the box bears an address in Parkstone, Dorset. The Museum also has a cardboard box containing a selection of cans and lids for the machine (93/4/1-13).

    Canning machine. A 'Homcam' canning machine for domestic use. Previous methods of food storage including drying, fermenting, and salting foods. Canning foodstuffs at home was not possible until the late 18th Century. in 1810 Englishman Peter Durand had introduced a method for sealing food in "unbreakable" tin cans. In recent years, the popularity of reuseable storage has risen as shoppers want to move away from one use plastic containers.
