Description
This is a beading plane, a type of moulding plane for shaping a number of narrow semicircular mouldings in wood. The front end is stamped 'Moseley, 16 New St.' and 'J. Kint'. It was used at R. Middleton & Sons' wheelwrights workshop in Eddington, Hungerford, from about 1860.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This plane came from the Middletons’ wheelwrights’ shop at Hungerford where it has been used since about 1860. It is the type of moulding plane called a ‘Bead’ and was used for making a number of narrow mouldings of semi-circular shape in wood, such as is found in furniture, door panels and the edge of ceiling rafters. The wooden sole of the plane which is 2 inches wide consists of the solid shaped stock, into which have been mortised 3 narrow strips of wood which form the ridge like sections of the sole. Another strip of wood has also been nailed into the side of the sole by 3 nails. The stock is 9.5 inches long by 3.4 inches high, and the front end is stamped ‘Moseley, 16 New St.’ and ‘J. Kintt.
