  • Description
This type of moulding plane is called a 'sash tool', as its main use was to produce a rather elaborate mould on window sashes. A narrow strip of wood has been added to the side of the sole which alters the shape of the moulding produced. There are several names stamped on the stock: 'Wheeler', 'R.R' and 'S. Taylor'. This mould was used at R. Middleton & Sons' wheelwrights workshop in Eddington, Hungerford.

  • Archival history
MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This tool was used at the Middletons' wheelwrights' shop at Hungerford (Berks). // This type of moulding plane is called a 'Sash Tool', as its main use was to produce a rather elaborate mould on window sashes. The mould is commonly found in the windows of houses built in the Victorian era, but today it is not fashionable, and the sash tool is rarely used by craftsmen. // The plane is 9.6 inches long, 3.1 inches high and 1.9 inches wide at the sole. A narrow strip of wood, nailed by three nails to the side of the sole, projects from the bottom side of the stock. By placing this projection along the side of a piece of wood when planing, a mould parallel to the edge would be produced. The front end of the stock is stamped with the words 'Wheeler' in the top right hand corner, 'R.R' and 'S. Taylor' near the sole. 'S. Taylor' is also stamped at the back end of the stock. The plane is made of beech. The blade and stock are of these shapes: [sketch] See also 51/36M.’
