A jack plane or fore plane, known as a 'go faster plane' in Berkshire, is a woodworking tool used in the preliminary levelling of rough surfaces. The front of the stock of this plane is stamped 'I.B.', but nothing is known of its origins.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This Jack or Fore plane is a small plane for quick, preliminary levelling, and it is known in Berkshire as ‘A go faster plane’. It measures a total length of 8.5 inches and the front of the stock measures 2.3 inches wide at the bottom, 2.0 inches wide at the top, while it is 2.0 inches high. The back of the stock is depressed, and the semi-circular depression acts as an additional hand grip during the rapid planning movement. There is an upwards discharge of shavings, through an opening that measures 2.5 inches in length and 2.2 inches in width. The blade which measures 2.2 inches in width is at a Common Pitch of 45 degrees from the horizontal, thus set for planning soft woods. A back plate keeps the blade in place. The sole to the front of the blade opening is shod with a trapeze shaped piece of metal, fitting flush with the beech wood sole. This is kept in place by three wood screws.
