  • Archival history
MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'These are wooden clogs, mounted on oval shaped irons, worn as overshoe by most countrywomen in the past to keep their feet out of the mud of the farmyard or country road. // They have wooden soles measuring 10.25 inches in length, and leather side pieces nailed to the wood. The side pieces have laces which fasten over the top of the foot. There are no toecaps on this pair. The irons are mounted on two short legs riveted to the sole. An extension of the front leg continues to the toe of each shoe and curls over the end, thus securing the iron even more firmly. // See also 51/700/1-2L.', No Lavinia Smith No. recorded., Heritage of the Hendreds Exhibition Catalogue 1969 - 'Catalogue of Exhibits // Number 33 // Pattens // Lent by The Museum of English Rural Life' (The description in the catalogue could also be in reference to 51/786/1-2, 51/701/1-2 and 51/700/1-2)
