Description
Pastry stamp and pastry trimmer. Used at Papplewick Hall, Nottinghamshire, from 1860 and then at Goldwell in Newbury, Berkshire, from 1916.
This cast brass pastry stamp and pastry trimmer was used for cutting and marking pastry. The notched wheel can either cut a serrated edge or leave a serrated pattern on the pastry. It was used at Papplewick Hall, Nottinghamshire, the donor's family home, from 1860 and then at Goldwell in Newbury, Berkshire, from 1916.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'Pastry stamps, knives or jiggers have been in common use since the 17th century for cutting the dough before baking. The nitched [sic] wheel caused a serrated pattern and the end of the handle which is claw shaped was used to make ornamental patterns. // This is a cutter of eighteenth century type, made of cast brass. The handle is ornamented in the middle and whole tool is beautifully made. It measures 4.5 inches in length. // It was used at Papplewick Hall, Nottingham from 1860 and afterwards at ‘Goldwell’, Newbury, Berkshire from 1915 [documentation for other objects from the donor states 1916].'
