Lavinia Smith got this parting dish from Mrs Winefred Anns, East Hendred. It was sent out to the fields, at harvest time, with foodstuffs.
Parting dishes were sent out to the fields, particularly at harvest time, with vegetables on one side, Yorkshire pudding on the other and meat resting on a trivet above, and were also used as a cooking utensil. Lavinia Smith recalls seeing them carried around as late as 1925. This parting dish is made of earthenware, decorated with a design in white slip and brown glaze. Lavinia Smith obtained it from Mrs Winefred Anns, who probably lived in the area of East Hendred, Oxfordshire (formerly in Berkshire).

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This is a very large parting dish made of slip ware. It was used for carrying meat and vegetables out to the fields, and also as a cooking utensil. Lord Ernle told me that they were now rare. The largest dish belonged to Mrs Anns. The next in siz [sic] was given to me by Mrs Albert Stone who had had it from Mrs Betteridge who had got it from her mother Mrs West who for many years lived at the Abbey Manor Farm.'
