Description
This is a skipping rope with handles made from old wooden weaving-bobbins and rope made of plaited jute. The item was produced as tourist item, complete with card of 'traditional skipping rhymes', for sale in shop in York. The handles are stamped '[...] HALIFAX'.

It is a playground game where the skipper holding the handles swings the rope over their head and under their feet to jump over. Sometimes the rope can be held by two others who swing the rope for the skipper. // How old is it? It was made in 1976 in Halifax, Yorkshire. It was made as a tourist item. // Which other objects in the collection relate to the skipping rope? This cane hoop is a traditional child’s toy [MERL 68/433]. The hoop is rolled around the ground using a short wooden stick.'
