Oven scraper used for scraping the ashes out of an oven before dough was put in to bake. From a farmer on the Sudeley Estate, Gloucestershire.
An oven scraper was used for scraping the ashes out of an oven before dough was put in to bake. The ovens were very hot and very deep so very long handled implements were needed. This scraper came from Frank Brown, a farmer on the Sudeley Estate in Gloucestershire.

Massingham Collection // NUMBER: 51/167 // DESCRIPTION: This scraper was given to Mr Massingham by Mr Frank Brown, a farmer on the Sudeley Estate (Glos.). It was used for scrapping the ashes from a brick oven before the dough was put in to bake. // It consists of a wooden handle 3 feet 7.25 inches long which fits into the socket of the iron blade. The socket is 11 inches in length, making a total length of 4 feet 6.25 inches for the handle. The socket is rivetted to the blade which is in the shape of a half moon, and is set on the handle at right angles like a how blade. It measures 4.65 inches by 13.25 inches.’
