    This tester used to measure moisture in grains made by the Baldwin Instrument Co. Dartford, Kent, dates from the 1940's.
    This tester used to measure moisture in grains made by the Baldwin Instrument Co. Dartford, Kent, dates from the 1940's. This tester was made by the Baldwin Instrument Co. of Dartford, Kent, and according to the instruction card is no. Z205. This is an early example and dates from the late 1940's. The grain sample was tested for moisture content by pouring into the cell when placed in the socket. Interpretation of the meter reading was made with reference to the chart on the reverse of the card. This tester was used by Coates & Sons, a firm in business from the early 19th century to 1972. In the 20th century they also dealt in animal feedstuffs and fertilisers. Accounts of the firm are deposited in the Bucks. Co. Record Office.

    MERL 'Handwritten accession' form (Institute of Agricultural History) – 'Tester, grain moisture // Mr J Coles Somerton // Description: Grain moisture tester of iron finished in cream enamel with chrome plated handles on sides, and black plastic switches. Circular socket (diameter 9cms) contains chrome plated cell with electrode in centre (another cell is missing) Also missing is a cover for the machine instruction card slotted on back // Associated information: Made by the Baldwin Instrument company, Dartford Kent and according to the instruction card is no.z205. This is an early example and dates from the late 1940s.
