Description
A butter scoop or skimmer, for skimming off butter as it forms in the churn. This came to the museum as part of the Sharp collection.
This is a butter scoop, also known as a skimmer, which is a butter making utensil with for skimming off butter as it forms in the churn. It is essentially a wooden scoop, with holes in to allow liquid to drain away. This came to the museum as part of the Sharp collection.

Archival history
The Sharp Collection of agricultural and dairying equipment was compiled by Reverend C. J. Sharp at Wonersh, Surrey. Reverend Sharp died in 1967 and the Museum acquired the Collection for £60 in 1968., MERL ‘History Artefacts’ cards - ‘SKIMMER Wood // PROCESSING Milk Butter // Source Rev Sharp // Notes: Description: A skimmer made from one piece of wood with a handle that curves backwards to enable a good grip to be obtained when in use. The face of the skimmer is oblong and has five rows of holes in it to allow the butter milk to drain away. Use: For skimming off the butter as it formed in the churn.’
