  • Description
    These three clothes pegs were made by Gypsies who lived in Hurt Wood, Surrey. They also made baskets. Their wares were sold by Mr Grover, a fishmonger in Shere, Surrey, who also made fireworks. These pegs are all that is left of a set of 24 bought by the donor in 1942-1943 and in constant use until she donated them to the Museum in 1966.

    MERL ‘Handwritten catalogue’ form - ‘CLOTHES PEGS // Domestic- Clothing- Laundering // Mrs K Rhodes, Reading // Made by gypsies [Gypsies] who lives in the Huntwood in Surrey. They sold their ware through the fishmonger, Mr Glover. The pegs have been in constant use since 1943.’
