    This is an Italian lantern made of japanned iron with brass mountings and a handle bound with leather. It has a glass window and dormers for ventilation. It dates from the eighteenth century.

    MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This is a hand lantern of Italian origin. It is made of japanned iron, with brass mountings and the handle bound with leather. The top is made in the form of a cone with dormers for ventilation. The cover for the window is attached to the top, so that, by screwing the top round, the hole is completely shut off. // The lantern measures 9.5 inches in height.', Victoria & Albert Museum No. M1008, 1926.
