Description
This is an earthenware preserving jar, glazed on the inside, which probably dates from 1870-1890. This type of jar was known locally in Devon as a 'steyne' or 'stein'. It was used for pickling eggs. It was used by the donor circa 1935-1960 at Bude, Devon, by the donor's mother at Lutson Farm near Soldon Cross, Devon, and possibly also by the donor's grandmother at Thurlibeer, Devon.

1 jar: red earthenware; fair condition - internal deposit and flakingThe white rime inside is a deposit from isinglass which has eaten away the glaze and caused flaking of the internal surface.
Archival history
MERL 'Catalogue index' card (draft form) – ‘Two jars, referred to locally as steynes or steins of red clay, glazed internally. The smaller jar is 10 1/2” high (63/30) and the larger 13” (63/31). Both have a diameter of 8” at the top. // They have been used in the last 30 years for pickling eggs; the white rime inside is a deposit from isinglass which has eaten away the glaze & caused flaking of the internal surface. // Used by Mrs A. Saunders, Berries, Bude since c.1935 and previously be her mother at Lutson, Soden [Soldon] near Holsworthy Devon. They may have been brought to Lutson Farm from Thurlibeer, a few miles away, by Mrs Saunders’ grandmother. The jars are two of many similar clay pots & trendles [?] used for food preservation at Lutson. // Probable date of manufacture c.1870–90. Place of manufacture unknown.’
