    This is a box containing thirteen graining combs, used by painters and decorators for creating a wood effect. The box bears the inscription 'Footprint // Made in England'. The combs belonged to the donor's husband, Mr W. J. King, of King Brothers of Basingstoke, Hampshire, which was founded in 1874.

  • Archival history
    MERL ‘Memorandum form’, 20 September 1963 – ‘Tools given by Mrs. M. King of Basingstoke, widow of W.J.King who died earlier in the year. His grandfather started the business in 1874, that is King Brothers in Basingstoke. // Veneering hammer, plough and painter’s graining combs given in August 1963, via Mrs. Newman of 25 Beech Lane, Earley. She is going to bring in about two dozen other tools, information and any catalogues later on.’
