  • Description
    This ‘Hull fish landing’ basket, also known as a ‘Hull oblong fish lander’, was made by Stanley Bird, a basketmaker from Great Yarmouth, for the Museum. It is a tall, narrow, oblong basket made of cane with oak battens riveted on the sides and bottom, and with three leagues of galvanised wire. These baskets were developed by Bird for Hull Fisheries Ltd. for use on refrigerated trawlers. The fish would be frozen inside the basket and landed in a block of ice.

    An order of 12 baskets from Stanley Bird (Basketware) Ltd. to Dorothy Wright, care of the Keeper at MERL. According to the delivery note, the order consisted of: 1 quarter cran; 1 small cran; 1 eighth cran; 1 oblong Hull lander; 1 oval Aberdeen lander; 1 liver basket; 1 ice basket; 1 trawl basket; 1 cobbing basket; 1 kipper basket; 1 wash basket; 1 eel pot., Stanley Bird (Basketware) Ltd. label: All cane oblong Hull fish landing baskets for landing quick frozen fish from the trawler., MERL 'Catalogue of baskets' form – 'NAME: HULL FISH LANDING BASKET (Stanley Bird) // Acc. Oak battens. 2 galvanised wire leagues from end to end & one from side to side. // Shape and construction: Oblong, tall & narrow. The upset & first 6” of side of round cane, subsequent randing in split cane.
