    Hot water jug made of Britannia metal 'Meriden Britannia Co. no 25 pat. June 8 1858. Double wall pitcher' .
    This large hot water jug is made of Britannia metal and has a double wall to keep the contents either hot or cold. The jug is decorated with incised wavy lines and a swan on the lid. On the bottom are small oval plates which read 'Meriden Britannia Co. no 25 pat. June 8 1858. Double wall pitcher' and 'Sole agents in London. The Wenham Lake Ice Co. – 140 – Strand, W.C.' It was used at the donor's family home of Papplewick Hall, Nottinghamshire, from 1860 and then at Goldwell Hall, Newbury, from 1916.

    MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This large hot water just was used at Papplewick Hall, Nottingham from 1860. From 1916 it was in use at Goldwell, Newbury. // It is made of Britannia metal and a double wall keeps the contents either hot or cold. The main body of the jug is incised with fine, wavy lines, there is a large piece of decoration below the spout and the handle is also decorated. The lid is surmounted by a swan. On the bottom, there are small oval plates which read: “Meriden Britannia Co. no 25 pat. June 8 1858. Double wall pitcher” and “Sole agents in London. The Wenham Lake Ice Co. – 140 – Strand, W.C.”. // It stands 12 inches in height and is 7.5 inches in diameter across the base.'
