    Cotton bonnet, worn when working the fields. Referred to as an ‘old woman’s travelling cap’. Given to the donor in 1914, worn when gardening.
    This is a white cotton sun bonnet, of the type worn by women when working the fields to shade the eyes and protect the nape of the neck from the sun. The donor referred to the bonnet as an ‘old woman’s travelling cap’. It was given to the donor in 1914 by a woman who had bought several as they were going out of fashion, and was subsequently worn by the donor when gardening.

Wicksteed, The Old Manor, Childrey, Nr. Wantage who told me she had bought several of these caps as they were going out of fashion. I have worn it myself as it shades your eyes & protects the nape of your neck when working in the fields or garden. // …’
