Stand and barrel from a goffering iron made by W. Hitchcock & Co. circa 1850. Used to smooth and crimp ruffles in clothes.
This is the stand and barrel from a goffering iron. It is made of iron - the stem is wrought and the remainder is cast. It was made by W. Hitchcock & Co. circa 1850. Goffering irons were used to smooth and crimp ruffles in clothes. The iron would be heated in a fire until red-hot, then inserted into the barrel of a goffering iron stand, thus heating the outside of the barrel, and the cuffs and frills would be crimped on this. This goffering iron is made of iron - the stem is wrought and the remainder is cast. It was made by W. Hitchcock & Co. circa 1850.
