Description
This conical milk churn is made of tinned steel, with a brass band at the top and a brass domed outer lid. It has an outlet pipe at the base, but no tap, and two hinged handles halfway up the sides. It was used by Farmers Clean Milk Dairies Ltd. of Greyfriars Road, Reading. It was used with a milk barrow for the transport and storage of milk for sale.

4. Milk churn. Doorstep delivery of milk became more common from the later nineteenth century, especially in the larger towns and cities. A churn like this was pushed on a barrow around the streets and the milk ladled out into jugs or other containers provided by the customer. By the time it was purchased, the milk wasn't always very fresh or clean, and could well be contaminated further by the jug into which it was poured. This churn was used in the early twentieth century by Clean Milk Dairies of Reading in Berkshire. 59/275.7. Milk churn. MERL 'Handwritten accession' form (Institute of Agricultural History) – ‘Description: Large tinned steel churn for use with a milk barrow. It has a strong rim at base and brass band at top. Outlet pipe at base but no tap. The hinged handles are attached by plates to the churn. There is an inner lid with central handle. The outer lid is domed & brass covered. There is a hinged catch for locking and numbers up to 12 (gallons?) are engraved inside the churn. // Dimensions: Height 83.0cm Diameter, base 45cm Diameter, top 33cm. // Associated information: This churn was used by Clean Milk Dairies before it came to MERL via Mr Lay. // It was used for the transport and storage of milk for sale.'
