    A ditch would be dug with a spade and then the bottom cleaned and smoothed with the scoop. This scoop was probably used in Gloucestershire.
    Scoops were used for digging land drains. The ditch would first be dug with a spade and then the bottom cleaned and smoothed with the scoop. This scoop was probably used in Gloucestershire in the mid-nineteenth century.

    9. Drainage scoop. This scoop came originally from Gloucestershire and was in use at the end of the nineteenth century. It has a curved iron end and would have been useful for scooping mud from a narrow trench, perhaps in readiness for laying drainage pipes across a field. 56/201.
