A hame is the rigid wooden frame of a horse's harness and would be attached to a padded leather collar. This is a pair of nineteenth century hames, made of wood and metal, with fixing points. Nothing is known of their origins.

MERL 'Handwritten accession' form (Museum of English Rural Life) – ‘These hames are made of metal and wood. They are curved in shape and the wooden part is shaped to fit into the curve of the iron. They appear to be a pair but one has a ring and pin fixed to the end whereas the other has not. There are fixing brackets and rings on both. Near the top curves a heavy hook is fixed into the hames – it is missing on one of them and only holes are visible.’, Lavinia Smith Catalogue (D60/28) - 'A list of the contents of the East Hendred museum.
